Annie Somerville Obituary

“Vibrant, Full of Life, Determined and Kind Spirit.”

Annie Lizza Hention Somerville was born November 26, 1946, in Donalsonville, Georgia, to the late Mathew Hention and Violet McClendon Hention. She transitioned to her heavenly home on November 22, 2021.

She was educated in Seminole County and Dougherty County School Systems.  She was a graduate of Monroe High School Class of 1964. After high school, Annie had big city dreams and obtained her parents’ approval to move to Newark, New Jersey, to live with her uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Bessie Hention. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan, to assist with an elderly aunt. The Hention family tree has many sets of twins. Ann welcomed her sons, Raashon and Raashea on February 4, 1972, and she loved and cherished them with all her might until she answered the master’s call.

After completing Meadows College, Annie was well positioned working for the City of Atlanta.  She received various accolades for her job performance and became Executive Assistant to former Atlanta Mayor, Maynard Jackson. In May of 1992, Annie suffered a massive stroke on the eve of starting a new job. While the doctors said that the odds were stacked against her surviving, our God is forever faithful and Annie lived an independent life until her passing. Her determination, strength, and faith were a reflection of God’s unwavering love and grace.

Annie accepted Christ at an early age at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. As an adult, she became a member of Bethel AME Church in Albany, Georgia, and attended faithfully until the global pandemic. She truly had a green thumb. It wasn’t uncommon to see her nurturing her plants outside on the porch.  She also loved thrifting and had an eye for nice quality things.

In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by all of her siblings: sisters, Ellen Parker and Gloria Jones; and brothers, Calvin, Bobby and Thomas Hention.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: sons, Raashon Hention, LaGrange, Georgia, and Raashea Hention, Albany, Georgia; two grandchildren, O’Shea and Angel Tate of Cincinnati, Ohio; special friends, Pat Culpepper and Theresa Booker of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.

We will truly miss her “love and laughter”.  Even though her speech was impaired by the stroke, at the end of each call or visit, she would “clearly” articulate, “I-Love-You.”
