James Terry McKinney was the first born to Henry and Lathey Jones McKinney. He was born on Jan. 30, 1944.
His early childhood education was received in the Dougherty County School System. He graduated from Monroe High School in the class of 1962.
James Terry McKinney was united in holy matrimony to his beloved Sarah Smith who preceded him in death. This union was blessed with five lovely children: Earl J. McKinney, Sr., Felicia Jereda, Maria Norman, Lynn Williams and Capucine Smith. " He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD." (Proverbs 18:22)
"JT' as he was affectionately called by his family and friends was a man who loved his family and was dedicated to them. He believed that his family was his responsibility. He was a kind and gentle man with a heart of gold. "JT" was no stranger to hard work. For 32 years he worked two full-time jobs.
For 37 years he was employed at McGregor Golf before retirement. He also retired after 32 years from Darton College, now Albany State University. After his retirements he and his wife Sarah became entrepreneurs. They were the owners of the McKinney Janitorial Services.
Realizing all the blessings that the Almighty God had and was bestowing upon him, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. In 1988 he joined the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the tutelage of the late Rev. Eugene Baldwin. He became a member of the Sr. Usher Board and served faithfully until his demise.
On Sunday morning, October 4, 2020, @ 9:08 AM, God called his faithful servant home from the Wilson Hospice House to receive his crown. He moved to his "Brand New Home" that Jesus prepared for him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah McKinney; his granddaughter, Imoni McKinney; his parents, Henry and Lathey McKinney; and a brother, Henry McKinney, Jr.
Loving memories will be cherished by his devoted five children: Earl J. (Shakaria) McKinney, Felicia (Eddie) Jereda, Maria (Nathaniel) Norman. Lynn (Monetriya) Williams and Capucine (Willie) Smith; twelve (12) grandchildren and four (4) great-grandchildren; seven brothers, David (Carolyn) McKinney, Eddie McKinney, Sr., Larry (Betty) McKinney, James McKinney, Gregory (Lynette) McKinney, Sr., Fred (Donnie) McKinney, Sr., and Charles (Karen) McKinney; three (3) sisters, Mary Ann (Thomas) Gulley, Gloria McKinney and Renee'(Michael) Hall; two special cousins, Mary Jones and Robert Lee (Ella Mae) McKinney; two (2) brothers-in-law, George (Bobbie) Smith and Learotha (Nettie) Williams; one (1) sister-in-law, Christine Smith; one (1) aunt, Dora Bell Walton; one (1) uncle, John Will (Essie) McKinney; a special friend of the family, Lillian Wright and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his bereaved St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church family and pastor.
