Charles R Whitsett

Charles R. “Sonny” Whitsett was born on March 28, 1936, to the late Charles Whitsett, Sr., and Mrs. Rosa Coachman. He departed this life on Friday, February 18, 2022, at Phoebe North Memorial Hospital in Albany, GA.

Sonny was educated in the Dougherty County School System. He was a proud graduate of the Monroe High School Class of 1955. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon leaving the military, he settled in Manhattan, NY, and after 36 years as a postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service, he retired and relocated to Albany, GA.

He was a faithful member of the Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church. At Second Mt. Zion, Sonny implemented the Men’s Ministry, sang in the Male Chorus and the Mass Choir.

Family members left to cherish his loving memories are his wife, Ruby Dean King Whitsett; aunt, Dicy Coachman Rambo, Albany, GA; cousins, Joyce (John) Pitts, Buford, GA, Jessica (Paul) Hart, Albany, GA, Eugene “Garland” Coachman, Albany, GA, Antonette (Cindy) Hamilton, Albany, GA, Walter Richardson, Albany, GA, and Richmond (Judith) Davis, Akron, OH; sister-in-law, Arusha Foster; brother-in-law, Willie King, Jr.; stepchildren, Rasheelah “Shawn” Jester, Jonesboro, GA, Freddie L. Williams, Upper Marlboro, MD; and a host of other friends and family.
