A precious one from us is gone, a voice we love is now still, a place is vacant in our heart that can nevermore be filled.
“Life is never measured by how many years we live, but by the kindly things we do and the happiness we give.” Dr. Clarence Calhoun’s deep love and unwavering commitment to provide care for people’s health enhanced his days working lovingly and diligently with his patients, some of whom became extended family members. His caring and compassionate spirit made him an amazing doctor. His patients knew they were in good hands if he was taking care of them. Soft spoken and sometimes quiet, he was a fun-loving beautiful spirit who loved family and friends. He was an exceptional father, grandfather, physician, and friend.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. Isaiah 9:6
Born in Newnan, Georgia on August 24, 1951 to the late Corrine Acey Calhoun and the late Albert Calhoun, Sr., Dr. Clarence Calhoun received his early education from the public school system of Coweta County. He then matriculated at Albany State College, where he graduated with honors in 1973, and at the Medical College of Georgia, graduating with honors in 1977. He completed his medical residency at The University of Florida Health Shands Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida 1977-1982. His certifications and Licensure include Florida State Medical License, 1990-2000, and Georgia State Medical License 1982-2021. He held professional membership in the American Board of Surgery, the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
A Time for Every Activity Under Heaven
In 1982, Dr. Calhoun returned to Albany, Georgia and opened the Clarence Calhoun, MD medical practice. In addition to his private practice, he was affiliated with Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, as a general surgery specialist (with expertise in laparoscopic surgery), and Chief of Surgery. Additionally, thousands of students benefitted from Dr. Calhoun’s service as chief physician at Albany State University, and at Turner Job Corps.
Clarence never met a stranger and always greeted people with a smile. His outpouring spirit was matched only by his generosity to the many causes he supported in the local community. Having served as a member of the Albany State University Foundation Board, he was one of the university’s most committed supporters. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Albany, Georgia.
