Gussie Mae Lowe Whitlow was a woman who lived the life she sang about in her song! She was not JUST your average wife, mother, sister, or confi-dant. No! She was a woman of God who could prophesy, sing, and preach—NEVER tired. On August 30,1952, Gussie was the oldest of five children born to the late Andrew and Gracie Lowe. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and united with Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church.
While having a hand in raising her brothers and sister, Gussie had to grow up fast—but God always allowed her to triumph. She attended the public schools of Dougherty County where she excelled academically and artisti-cally. As a student at Monroe High and Dougherty High, she was a cheer leader, chorus member, and an extraordinary soloist. In addition, Gussie, along with several classmates, formed the group “The Joys of Ecstasy” where she developed as a talented and anointed vessel for the Lord. She was an honor graduate of Dougherty High School in 1971. After gradua-tion, she continued her education at Albany State (College) University majoring in Music. In 1976, she was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a minor in Education.
She began her teaching career as a paraprofessional and later became a Science/Social Studies teacher in the Dougherty County School System. For 32 years at Albany Middle School, she poured more than education into students—she taught them how to live the right way!
God guided her to the love of her life, Alfred Whitlow, and they married on February 28, 1972. Through this union, four daughters were born. With her husband and family by her side, she directed choirs all over Southwest Georgia. She and her husband trained their daughters to be-come melodious singers known as “The Whitlow Family.” Slightly divert-ing from her music ministry, she answered a higher calling when God gave her a bible and said, “Preach My Word!” Thus, she began preaching the word of LIFE as pastor of The Church of the Kingdom of God, Inc. in Albany, where she ministered until her transition on April 27, 2020.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 48 years, Alfred Whitlow; two brothers, Otis Lowe and Marvin Lowe.
She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Africa (Zachary Sr.) Jackson, Frederia (Vincent) Sampson, Kenya (Fabion) Watson, and Victo-ria Whitlow; siblings, James (Brenda) Perry, Derial Lowe, and Alfredia L. Mackeroy; grandchildren, Alfree (Christopher) James, Zachary Jackson, Jr., Tyrone Robinson, Jr., Sade Watson, and Fabion Watson; uncle, Isaiah Elliott; aunts, Mattie Stephens, Magnolia (Nathaniel) Whatley and Gloria Colbert; sister-in-law, Dr. Mahasin Majied; brother-in-law, James Whitlow; five BELOVED great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
