Henretta Stallworth Benson was born to the late Henry Matthew Stallworth and Leola Cauley Stallworth on November 3, 1940, in Mobile, Alabama. Henretta was an only child. She slipped quietly into eternal sleep on August 1, 2022.
Henretta met and married her soulmate, Dr. E.W. Benson (who passed in Feb 2009), in March 1966. From this 45yr union, two boys were born: Rodger Ernest and Rafer Matthew.
Henretta graduated from Central High in Mobile, Alabama, and matriculated at Alabama State University and Albany State University. It was at Albany State where she graduated with a BS in Mathematics. Henretta valued the power of an education and insisted that her boys graduate from college, and not just any college, but Albany State (which they both did). Upon graduation, Henretta became a mathematics teacher in the Clarke County School District (Athens, Georgia) and the Dougherty County School System. She retired from the Dougherty County School System after over 30 years of teaching.
Henretta called Hines Memorial CME Church her church home and was a faithful member for over 50 years.
Henretta leaves her loving memory to be cherished by her sons, Rodger (Andrea) Benson and Rafer Benson; her four grandchildren, Alexandrea (Willie) Goodwin of Austell, GA, Bria Marie Benson of Winston-Salem, NC, Morgan Benson of Columbia, SC, and Matthew Benson of Colorado Springs, CO, and two “adopted” children, Thomas (Melody) Jordan and Susan (James) Brooks. She leaves behind a precious cousin, Eula Lilly, who resides in Mobile, AL. In addition, she leaves two god children, Dr. Marla (Martin) Morgan and Tara (Al) Bell. Lastly, she leaves countless former students and fellow teachers who have fond memories of her during her teaching years.
