Isaiah John Thompkins was born May 31, 1931, to the late Lucious Thompkins, Sr. and Janie Witcher Thompkins in Albany, Georgia. His family was saddened with tears as surely, the angels in heaven smiled on April 21, 2021, welcoming Isaiah John Thompkins home at last.
He began his education in Dougherty County, Georgia School System where he graduated from Monroe High School. Brother Thompkins married the late Bule Lovett, and no children were born to this union.
As a young man, Isaiah, who was known as "Uncle Ike" to many, enlisted in the United States Air Force and fought honorably in the Korean Conflict before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, gaining employment as a shipyard engineer.
Our beloved "Uncle Ike" returned to his roots in Albany, Georgia, after retiring and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he rarely missed Bible Study or weekly church service. The Kelly Family Group and Leisure Plus Ministries provided strong family bonds with Isaiah John Thompkins, and he was a recipient and giver of so much love. Brother Thompkins was admired by many for his dapper suits and hats, his friendly smile and humor, and also his in-depth historical conversations. This avid player on the golf course and lover of sweet potato pie which was his favorite dessert will be missed by many for so many reasons.
Those left behind to cherish loving memories of this man include siblings, Paul Thompkins of Tampa, Florida, and Dora Lee Thompkins of Brandywine, Maryland; and adopted families of Aaron and Gwendolyn Kelly and Gerald and Jacqueline Reid, both of Albany, Georgia. Others cherishing memories are devoted nieces and nephews, namely, Cheryl Giles, Linda G. Hille, Ruby Dean Whitsett, Kenneth Hagans, Kenneth Reese, Xavier Reese, and a host of other relatives. However, Shelia Knighton and Linda Breedlove Howard are to be recognized for their sincere friendships with "Uncle Ike." Lastly, always present were his staff of dedicated caregivers during his final days before transitioning from his earthly home.
The family of Mr. Isaiah Thompkins has humbly and respectfully requested all financial contributions be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Scholarship Fund in his memory in lieu of flowers. Thank you.
