Johnny Marks Leggett Obituary

For each sunset, there's a sunrise in a land we cannot see. There's a place of love and endless dawn that's called Eternity. In this land, there are no shadows, and no deepening shades of night, and no candles are ever needed for God provides the light.

On the morning of Thursday, March 21, 2024, the angel of silence came into the room of Reverend Johnny Marks Leggett and with chilly fingers sealed the lips of a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend.

There are three steps to Heaven - out of self, into Christ, and into Glory. Reverend Johnny M. Leggett took these first two steps in life and allowed God to use him as an instrument to do His will. He has now taken the third step when his soul winged flight from the world of sin, sorrow, and pain to a place of eternal rest where he is reaping his great reward reserved for the faithful.

Reverend Johnny Marks Leggett, the eldest child and only son of Reverend Johnny Lee and Mrs. Connie Marks Leggett, was born in Albany, Georgia. At an early age, he took the second step by joining the Abundant Life Fellowship  Church pastored by his father.

Reverend Leggett developed special friendships with his peers, many of whom lived in the Evergreen community. He attended the public schools of Dougherty County, graduating from Westover Comprehensive High School in 1994. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health Sciences/Health Administration from Albany State University. While at Albany State University, he made many friends, was a member of the ASU Rams Football team, and became a member of the Delta Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Incorporated.

After receiving a call from God, he received a Master of Divinity degree from Morehouse School of Religion (Interdenominational School of Theology (ITC)). While there, Rev. Leggett was awarded the "Dr. Sandy F. Ray Distinguished Preaching Award." During his matriculation at Morehouse, he shadowed Pastor Willie J. Lawson at the Cornerstone Community Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA, where he later became a member. Under Pastor Lawson's mentorship, Rev. Leggett's spiritual and administrative growth soared. With increasing responsibilities at Cornerstone, Rev. Leggett progressed from Youth Minister to Assistant Pastor until he received the call to become Senior Pastor of the Brown's Hill Baptist Church in 2004. God used him in several locations including Senior Pastor of St. Mattew Baptist Church (Piedmont, SC), Bethany Baptist Church (Oakland, CA), and Senior Pastor of the Greater New Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Berkeley, CA, at the time of his death.

He is survived by his loving wife, R. Nicole Terry Leggett, and two children, Jayla S. Leggett, and Kristin S. Hardiman; grandson, Bryce B. Jenkins; his parents, Rev. Johnny L. and Connie Marks Leggett; siblings, Candice Ladalia Hunt (Michael), Andrea Camille Leggett, Carmine Simone Leggett; nieces, Caelyn Leggett-Rowe (Zamarius Rowe), Camryn Leggett, and Carlee Hunter; nephew, Zaiden Rowe; beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
