A time to be born;
Mary Elizabeth Smith Hines was born in Dougherty County, Georgia on May 20, 1944, the 2nd child of Joseph and Rosia Lee Mingo Smith.
A time to learn
She was a product of the Dougherty County School System, graduating with high honors from Monroe High School in June 1961.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Albany State (College) University with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. She continued her education in the Valdosta State University’s Master’s Program with emphasis in Management. She was a Certified Mediator in Higher Education and in Civil Disputes, Justice Center of Atlanta, GA; Professional Facilitator and Trainer, University of Georgia, Continuing Education Center, and a P.O.S.T. Certified Trainer/Facilitator, Georgia Public Safety Training Center.
A time to marry and multiply
In June 1961, she married James Richard Hines. To this union, three children were born – Elfreda Victoria Hines Blue, Lisa Maria Hines Levy and Darryl Keith Hines, Sr.
A time to work
Ms. Hines worked in many capacities in the City of Albany. She worked as a factory worker, a long-distance telephone operator for Southern Bell, a Job-Cost Estimator/Bookkeeper for M&H Plastering Company, a Teacher, a Program Administrator, a Project Director for the Labor Education Advancement Program (LEAP) of the Albany Urban League, an Accountant, and Director of Personnel & Budgets at Albany State University, as the Organization & Employee Development Manager and later as the Director of Human Resources Management for the City of Albany.
A time to rest from working
She retired from the City of Albany in May 2006 following 15.75 years of service.
A time to serve the Lord
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined 3rd Kiokee Baptist Church in June 1956. She served in many capacities at Third Kiokee: Past Chairperson of the National Board of Christian Education; Member of the Program, Budget and Auditing Committees; Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Third Kiokee Day Care Center, Inc., Sunday School Teacher and Song Leader, member of the Women of Excellence Mission; and the Willing Workers. She served as a Secretary, and initial budget developer of the Kiokee Congress of Christian Education.
A time to serve God’s people
Mary’s passion was to serve people. She served in many capacities over the years. She was a Member of Albany Kiwanis Club, where she served as Chairperson of the Community Service Committee; Served on Advisory Boards for the College of Business.
