Early Friday morning, February 16, 2024, Mary Sapp Jackson started her transition from Earth to her heavenly home. She was born May 3, 1951, to Nellie Sapp in Albany, GA. She was raised by Lonnie James Peterson and Nellie Sapp. She was the youngest of two children. She married William H. Jackson in August 1975. She was a very delightful child even though she had many medical challenges due to being premature at birth. She was continuously trying to help her family and others.
Mary was educated in the Dougherty County Public School System. She attended Lincoln Heights Elementary School and graduated from Monroe High School in 1968. She attended Albany State College and graduated in 1974 cum laude was a B.S. in English. She returned to school and obtained her master's degree in English in 1985. She started teaching school in Vienna, GA, and later began teaching in Dougherty County. She retired after teaching for 35 years. During her tenure as. teacher, she received the A.S.C. Upward Bound Teacher of the Year award in 1988, the Super Teacher Award for Project STARS, Most Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1995, and the Teacher of the Year in 1998 at Phoenix School of Achievement. After retirement, she continued to support education as a volunteer teacher for many years.
The most rewarding achievement in her life was obeying the gospel of Christ in being baptized on April 4, 2018, at the Church of Christ in Albany, GA. She was added to the Church of Christ on that day. She was a faithful member until her death. She always made an effort to encourage others.
She treasured spending time with all her family members and friends. She loved music, fishing, cooking, entertaining, and ensuring everyone felt connected and that they belonged. She loved playing table games with family and friends. She also enjoyed vacationing with her family. As Mary's health continued to decline, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter-in-law, Angelia; her son, Derrick; her sister, Deloris; and her grandsons, LeAnder and Nigel Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; grandmother, Rosa Sapp; her husband, William H. Jackson; aunts, Elizabeth Williams and Dorothy Sapp Grimes; her uncles, Ernest Sapp, Andrew Sapp, and Elmer Sapp; and her nephew, James Andrew Moon.
