We gather to honor the extraordinary life of Mary “Hazel” West Simmons, a vibrant spirit who embraced an incredible 96 years filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories, before she peacefully departed on July 8, 2025. Born on October 15, 1928, in Lee County, Georgia, she was the beloved daughter of Thomas and Webster Mae Holsey West. Hazel’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with joy, resilience, and an unwavering love for her family and friends.
As the firstborn girl in her family, she had four brothers: Caesar (deceased), Roger West, Paul West, and Solomon “Red” West, all of whom preceded her in death.
Mary radiated enthusiasm and a genuine love for learning, igniting her lifelong dream to be an outstanding educator. After graduating from Lee County Training School in Leesburg, Georgia, she pursued further education at Albany State University, where she proudly earned her Bachelor of Science degree. Her first job began at New Piney Grove Baptist Church, where she shared her knowledge and passion for two rewarding years. Her dedication to teaching truly made a difference in her students’ lives!
Mary joined the church at a young age and took pleasure in singing in the choir and playing the piano. In addition to her musical interests, she was a sports enthusiast and played basketball. Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed traveling and exploring various continents around the world. Always stylish and fashion-forward, she was recognized for her elegant sense of style.
She was active throughout her life, serving as a Sunday school leader, Mission and Scholarship leader, and President of the Englewood Federal Credit Union for over 20 years.
Mary was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Beta Omega Zeta Chapter. She was among the first to cross in the Pi Beta Chapter and received the Crystal Award, honoring over 50 years of membership and service.
Mary spent some time in New Jersey with family members before moving to Chicago, IL, where she earned her Master of Science degree in Education from Loyola University. Mary went on to have a very successful career in education for 27 years in Chicago. While there, Mary joined and served in various roles at Shiloh Baptist Church for over 75 years.
Married Bob Willis (deceased), and to this union, Dr. Paul V. Willis was born.
She was a dedicated member and servant at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Albany, GA, as well as Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Lee County.
As a devoted mother, aunt, and grandmother, she is survived by her son, Paul V. Willis (Diane); her grandson, Cameron Willis; her granddaughter, Porshe J. Barclay, and her great-granddaughter, Beiley Barclay. She is also survived by her siblings: Buddy Simmons (deceased), Thelma Fatima Miller, Edie Maude Halsey (deceased), Zelma Rosetta Simmons, and William “Bay” Simmons (Lucille).
She cherished and enjoyed her nieces and nephews, playing a significant role in their education across generations. From Chicago, her nieces and nephews include Kayee, Brett, Paula, Cassandra “Sandy” (deceased), Halsey, and Angela Pippins. From Albany/Atlanta, GA, they include Sheila Simmons, Wendy Thomas, Jeff Simmons, Jennifer Simmons, Michael Simmons, Michael Ray Simmons, and Donald Profit. From Atlanta - Pamela West Goode, Robert K. West, and Thomas C. West from Hawaii.
She was a woman of deep faith, fierce love, and strength, devoted to her family, her church, and her community. Her influence will be felt for generations through the lives she touched, the children she nurtured, and the faith, fun, and zest for life she exemplified every day.
