Mother Mattie Mae Perry Davis was born in Shellman, GA, on September 19, 1917, to the late Marcellus Perry and Mattie Harvey Perry. She was raised by God-fearing parents along with six sisters, Inez, Ola, Etta, Ruth, Cynthia, and Mary, and one brother, Major (Bud). She was educated in the public school system of Shellman, GA. Upon graduating from high school, she matriculated at Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, which was later renamed Albany State College, to pursue a career in education. She fulfilled the role of a school teacher for a brief period.
She united in holy matrimony to the late Jefferson F. Davis, Sr. To this union, two sons were born, Jefferson F. Davis, Jr. and Willie Davis, Sr.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age. She joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Shellman, GA. After marriage, she joined Eureka Baptist Church in Albany, GA, in 1944 to continue her Christian walk. She was a dedicated and faithful member until her health declined. She served in many capacities in the church. She proudly served on the usher board for several decades and later as a Mother of the Church until her demise. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She never missed attending her annual family reunion which has been in existence for over 60 years.
She departed this earthly life peacefully on July 16, 2022, at the age of 104. She leaves a legacy of love to her two sons: Jefferson F. Davis, Jr. and Willie J. Davis, Sr. (Johnnie - “JB”) - Albany, GA; five granddaughters: Deidre McConner (whom she raised) - Hampton, VA, Stephanie Davis - Carrolton, TX, Shayla Johnson - Atlanta, GA, Shonda Pope (Chadwick) and Krystal Washington - Albany, GA; five grandsons: Jeffrey F. Davis, III - Lakeland, FL, Jeffrey Perryman - Atlanta, GA, Willie J. Davis, Jr., Joseph Ford, and Perry Davis - Albany, GA; sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; two caretakers, Julia Nelson, and April Ware; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
