Mrs. Mildred Jackson Fields, the eldest child of the late Maskin Jackson and Alma Fields, was born on January 9, 1942 in Leesburg, Georgia. She was formerly educated in the Lee County school system, graduating from Lee County Training School. Upon graduating, Mildred relocated to Albany, Georgia, beginning a lifetime of service through each and every position she held. Starting as a dental assistant, she found herself making a noble decision, having to choose between keeping her job or to join in on the Civil Rights Movement that was rapidly approaching Albany, Georgia. Being a proponent for fairness, equity and forward mobility, she chose the latter. Solidifying her position in the community as a virtuous woman, she was known for helping others less fortunate than she was.
At an early age, Mrs. Fields confessed her faith in Christ and united with the Palmyra Baptist Church in Leesburg, Georgia. Later joining the Greater Fellowship Ministries in Leesburg, Georgia. Also at the early age of 18 she joined the Order of Eastern Star, Alpha Lodge #4 and Ruth Chapter #2 where she became a lifetime member.
On February 9, 1959, Mildred gave birth to her daughter Teresa J. Jackson, whom she doted on until Teresa's untimely earthly transition on February 15, 2015. Most of the community knows one because of the other. They both could be found together at any given shopping outlet or generally throughout the community.
Out of all of the accomplishments Mildred achieved she is most and respectfully known as a school crossing guard for the Dougherty County School System and chiefly as a foster mother for the Georgia Department of Human Services by which she carried out that duty for 20 plus years. She opened her home to females of every age who were in need of a loving home with stability. Mildred used that opportunity to teach impressionable girls lessons of life, the value of self worth, the importance of education and most importantly she showed them what unconditional love looked and felt like.
Mildred peacefully departed this earthly life on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at her granddaughter's home in Leesburg, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Mr. Cecil Ira Cooper; her parents; her sister, Ms. Juanita Fields; and devoted daughter, Ms. Teresa J. Jackson.
