Milton “June Bug” Griffin, Jr., the son of the late Milton, Sr. and Fannie Roberts Griffin, was born on January 29. 1949, in Albany, GA.
He was educated in the Dougherty County Public School System in Albany, GA, where he attended Coachman Park Elementary, Southside Middle School and Monroe High School. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1968.
He received Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was a member of the Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Albany, GA, where he served as a deacon and a member of the Male Chorus. He was also a member of the Holiday Society Club.
In January 1971, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Jacquelyn Ponder. To this union, two children were born, Cheryl and Tamika.
At a young age “June Bug” began working at Thomas Grocery where he gained knowledge about how to operate and manage a grocery store. He later worked at Colonial Bread Company where he made deliveries to several grocery stores on his route. In 1982 armed with the knowledge he had acquired over the years, he opened June Bug’s Grocery. The flood of 1994 came through Albany and destroyed his business. However, in 1997, he was able to rebuild and reopen June Bug’s Grocery as well as what is presently, June Bug’s Plaza.
He was passionate about baseball and played softball for the Bombers where he was pitcher. Because of his love for youth, he started the Junior Bombers little league baseball team and continued coaching for several years. After receiving many first-place trophies, he decided to move up to the Pony League. After many successful years of coaching Pony League. he began coaching for the American Legion Post 512 and for a brief period, T-ball to work with his grandson.
In September 2000, he was elected to the Dougherty County School Board where he represented District 2 for over two decades until his death.
On Wednesday, February 17, 2021, Milton transitioned from his earthly home to live eternally with the Lord.
Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Earnest Griffin, Roscoe Griffin, Jimmy Griffin, Bennie Griffin and Eddie Griffin, Sr.; and five sisters, Essie Mae Massengill, Pauline Robinson, Sarah Glover, Elizabeth Gaines and Ozie Dell Wright.
He leaves to cherish wonderful memories: his devoted wife, Jacquelyn P. Griffin; three children, Cheryl (Dexter) Mosley, Tamika Griffin, and Dontavius Price; grandchildren, Vanessa (Deontae) Richardson, Milton Simpkins, Roderick Hall, Jr., Tamaya Smith, Janaycia Jones, La’Quasia Price and Jaelon Price; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Tristan, Mason and Austin Richardson and MaLayah, Morgan and Marlee Simpkins; two sisters, Barbara White, Del Marie (Jonathan) Judge; two brothers, Otis (Celestine) Griffin, Monroe (Yolanda) Griffin; five sisters-in-law, Yvonne Griffin, Wilma Griffin, Gwendolyn Griffin, Annie (Albert) Blassingame, Patricia (Kary) Porter; three brothers-in-law, Robert Wright, Clifford (Melody) Ponder and Willie Frank Ponder; one aunt, Frankie Lee Roberts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
