Rena Dorothy Thomas was born on November 30, 1949, to the late Ben and Catherine Thomas. After 71 years on this earth, she departed this life on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
Rena was the third child of twelve children born to the late Ben and Catherine Thomas, two of whom predeceased her, Bro. Albert Williams (Philadelphia, PA), Ben (Alice) Thomas, Jr. (deceased), Deacon Rubin (Shelia) Thomas, Ruby Thomas, Cecil Leon (Carrie) Thomas, Patricia Thomas (deceased), Melvin Thomas, Patricia (Michael) Chandler, Carolyn T. (Rev. Richard) Jones, Janice T. Hall, and Mary L. Thomas.
She accepted Christ under the leadership of Rev. Jake Edwards, Jr. and was appointed to the benevolence ministry and later continued this appointment faithfully under the leadership of Pastor Gary C. Sanders, Sr.
Rena attended Monroe High School and graduated with the class of 1967. She furthered her education at Monroe Technical School in the field of nursing. Rena worked as a dedicated nurse for over fifty years at Palmyra Hospital, Phoebe Putney Hospital, and the American Red Cross until she retired.
Rena was known as “Mone” or “Sister,” and she had a deep love for her church, her pastor, and her family. She was a straight shooter from the heart and didn’t mind expressing her opinions. She was a ‘vier’ and had a heart filled with deep love for all of her many nephews and nieces. She could fry the best “southern chicken in the world,” and everyone stood in line to savor this delicious treat!
She leaves a niece she reared from birth, Takesia Offord (Etwone); three children she considered her grandchildren, Kingston, Dallis, and Easton, who were dear to her heart; nine siblings; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one uncle, James Williams (Honey); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family, and friends.
