Gunnery Sergeant (retired) Thomas Augustus Smith, Sr. was born on August 30, 1950, in Brookhaven, Mississippi, to Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Carrie Smith. He was called from labor to reward on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
Thomas was educated in the public schools of Brookhaven and graduated from Alexander High School in 1968 as president of his class. He then attended Jackson State {College} University. In 1970, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his time as a marine, Thomas was the drum major in the drum and bugle corps. While stationed in Paris Island, South Carolina, he was also a drill instructor. He received several medals and accommodations with three stars.
Thomas received Christ as a child of ten years old and was baptized at Second Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi. After moving to Albany, he joined Arcadia Missionary Baptist Church in the early 1990s. As a dedicated member of Arcadia, he served faithfully in the following capacities: chairman of the Deacons Ministry, chairman of the Benevolence Ministry, superintendent of Sunday School, and youth advisor.
On September 1, 1973, he was wed in holy matrimony to Annette Wilson. God blessed the two of them to enjoy fifty years of marital bliss. Two children were born to this union: Thomas, Jr., and Tacanya.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: James K. Smith, Charlie Smith, and David Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife, Annette Smith; his children, Thomas Smith, Jr. (Jennifer Battle), Albany, GA, Tacanya Smith, Tampa, Florida; Thomas Jordan (Tawana), Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Cynthia Dixon, Brookhaven, Mississippi; one brother-in-law, Henry Wilson, Sacramento, California; one sister-in-law, Diann Patricia Wilson, Albany, Georgia; five grandchildren, Akheema Fowler, Fayetteville, Georgia, Carmen Warren, Atlanta, Georgia, Devin Smith, Savannah, Georgia, McKenzie Watson, Nashville, Tennessee, Avery Jordan, Jacksonville, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Ahkiya, Kingsten, Akheena, Kylin; and a host of nieces and nephews.
