Tommie Postell was born in Albany, Georgia, to Frank and Winnie Postell. He and his younger brother, Fred, were raised from early childhood by their maternal grandmother, Dora Bell Wallace, due to the death of their mother. Tommie attended the public schools of Albany and graduated from Albany State College; after which he enlisted in the United States Navy where he was trained and served as a dedicated seaman and dental assistant.
Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, Tommie returned home to Albany where he met and married the love of his life, Irene Freeman, who blessed him with one son, TommiePostell, Jr., who also blessed him with one grandson, Bernard Postell. Tommie was further blessed with three additional siblings; Frank Jr., Ladalia, and Walter Postell from the marriage of his father, Frank, and stepmother, Darien.
Tommie began his teaching career and diligently served both as a classroom teacher and assistant principal for thirty-eight years. During the course of his teaching career, Tommie served many years as commander of the American Legion 512 where he was well known and respected among veterans and members of the community for his diligence and committed service. Tommie was also a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Tommie continued to serve his community as City Commissioner for several years during which he made numerous contributions to the positive growth of the City of Albany, where he was well respected as a fighter for the rights, interests, and well being of his constituents.
Tommie was preceded in death by his mother, Winnie; maternal grandmother, Dora; father, Frank; stepmother, Darien; and brother, Fred. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Tommie Jr. (Jacqueline Cook); grandson, Bernard; two brothers, Frank Jr. and Walter; two sisters, Ladalia and Gwendolyn; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and colleagues.
