Vernon Williams Obituary

Vernon Carson Williams, the son of the late James Williams and Gussie Hebert Williams, was born October 5, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Saturday, February 21, 2026, he departed this earthly life and entered eternal rest.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jimmy Williams.

Vernon completed his elementary and secondary education in the public school system of New Orleans, Louisiana.  He attended Southern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. He went on to receive a Master of Science Degree from the University of Georgia.

He served in the United States Army, taught school in Shreveport, Louisiana, and later moved to Albany, Georgia, in 1962, where he taught Art Appreciation at Albany State University.

Vernon is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and The American Legion Post 512.

He built meaningful relationships with colleagues, mentored students, and developed many friendships during his career and retirement.  Vernon had many passions in life. He enjoyed cooking traditional Creole cuisine for loved ones and friends, gardening, and providing entertainment for The Vernon Williams Comedy Show while playing cards, fishing, or just socializing. His creation of Magnificent Art Masterpieces for family and friends was absolutely MASTERFUL.  For sure, there were never dull moments.

Vernon united in holy matrimony to the late Shirley Martin Williams, sharing 58 years of loving memories. His memories will forever be cherished by his loving daughters, Vernadette Williams (Charlotte, NC), Gail Williams (Dallas, TX), and Evangela Williams Powell (Albany, GA)(Stevie); five grandchildren, Jessica Chubbs (Charlotte, NC), Jayson Sam (Dallas, TX), Onterious Williams, Keyomontay Powell, and Alfelia Powell (all of Albany, GA); five great-grandchildren, Janee Chubbs, Ariyanna Chubbs, Julianna Chubbs, Bella Chubbs (All of Charlotte, NC), and Keysen Powell (Albany, GA); two sisters-in-law, Jean Martin, and Jackie Byrdsong; one brother- in- law, Elmo Medlock, all of Los Angeles, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”
