Wright R. Benson, affectionately called “Little Buddy” and “Riley,” son of the late Ella Louise Benson and Dennis Riley was born on October 15, 1933, in Albany, Georgia. He was a kind and gentle spirit who loved people.
He attended the public schools of Dougherty County. Wright enlisted in the United States Navy and served for ten years.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he lived in Norfolk, Virginia, for several years before returning to Albany, Georgia.
Wright was employed by the Georgia Department of Transportation for 20 years before retiring. After two decades of service, he was the recipient of the Faithful Service Award.
He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until becoming ill. He also held loyal and active membership in the American Legion Post 512 of Albany, Georgia. Wright enjoyed attending football games and was an ardent fan of the Monroe High School “Golden Tornadoes.”
Wright transitioned peacefully on Friday morning, December 8, 2023, at Wynfield Park Health and Rehabilitation. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: James Williams; three sisters: Beatrice Moultrie, Louise Phillips, and Betty Laster; a niece, Mary Clark, and a nephew, Winfred L. Benson, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers: Charlie Benson of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Winfred L. Benson (Sara), of Albany, Georgia; four nephews: Larry Benson (Cynthia) of Chesapeake, Virginia; Thomas Laster, Jr., Larry Laster, and Curtis Laster, all of Albany, Georgia; six nieces: Thedjuana Benson Nicholson (Jerry) of McDonough, Georgia; Connie Benson of Chesapeake, Virginia; Imelda Allen, Wanda Leroy, Patricia Beasley, and Betty Jean Carter, all of Albany, Georgia; devoted friends: Ruben Thomas, Johnel Hillman, Tomeka Rogers, and Jane Young; and a host of other relatives, and friends.
